Ivory Coast

 

Ivory Coast food signifies the food prepared in Côte d’Ivoire, a country in Western Africa. The Ivory Coast cuisine resembles that of neighbouring countries, although dishes made with tubers and grains are predominant here. As French is the official language of the country, most dishes have a French name.

 

 

Ivory Coast Food - Common Ingredients

Wheat, rice, maize, millets, corn, peanuts, cassava, plantain, coconut, and yam are some of the common ingredients used in the Ivory Coast cuisine. Vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, and eggplant are used too. Fruits including banana, mango, pomegranate, pineapple, mandarin, and passion fruit are available here. Since this is a coastal region, seafood such as tuna, sardine, and shrimp are widely used in cooking. Chicken is also commonly used to prepare dishes.

The Ivory Coast cuisine uses peanut oil to cook food.

 

 

Traditional Food                        

Alloca, mafe, attieke, n’voufou, and kedjenou are some of the common foods of Ivory Coast. A snack made of fried plantains is alloca, while mafe is a dish of meat with peanut sauce. Attieke is a dish made with grated cassava and is often served with fish or meat. Kedjenou is a traditional stew of chicken with vegetables. N’voufou is made by mixing mashed bananas with palm oil. Braised fish and chicken cooked with onions and tomatoes are other traditional Ivory Coast food. A spicy peanut sauce is a common accompaniment in this region. Fried yam is eaten as a snack. Pan-fried frog leg is a local specialty which is made with garlic and parsley leaves. Gambas à la Sauce Blanche and Poissons à la Sauce Tomates are some of the famous fish preparations.

 

A dessert usually comprises of tropical fruits. Pineapple cake called Gâteau à l'Ananas and kola nuts called Noix de Kola are the popular desserts made here.

 

The common beverages of this country include ginger ale, local palm wine called Bangui, coffee, and red tea.

The people of the Ivory Coast wash their hands before eating, and the food is eaten with hands.

 

 

News

The Ivory Coast has been hit by an acute food crisis since late 2010. The post-election conflict with ethnic tensions and resultant violence has led to extremely low agricultural productivity and sharp price rises. Delayed rains along with low income and limited food resources have further worsened the situation. The food situation in the country is now said to be recovering.
